Anki Cozmo Website

The Anki Cozmo robot is a pre-built robot for ages 8+ that will bring your kids hours of fun straight out of the box. Anki’s website states that Cozmo has a ‘Big Brain. Bigger Personality.’ We couldn’t agree more. This charming little guy comes with pre-designed activities and games for your kids to explore that rewards them when they do. The more they interact with Cozmo, the more he will evolve.

This kit contains Cozmo – Anki’s self-aware robot, a charger, and three interactive cubes for Cozmo to play with. Each cube comes with a pre-installed 1.5 Volt / N size battery.

You will need to help your kids download the Anki Cozmo app, and charge the lithium-ion battery, which is included in the kit. A full, 30-minute charge should give your kids about 45 fun-filled minutes of interaction with Cozmo.

Conclusion
Adults

This is a great robot for the little nurturer in your family but proceed with caution. As we’ve mentioned, Anki went out of business in May 2019. Cozmo appears to have plenty of fans, many who are hoping Anki will eventually open-source Cozmo’s codebase. As a result, Cozmo may still have an exciting future for us to look forward to.

If you’re interested in purchasing Cozmo, we recommend you:

  1. Check out our Future of Anki’s Cozmo Robot Mystery post.
  2. See if you can download the Cozmo app onto your device.
  3. See if Anki’s Python SDK and its documentation are still available.
  4. Look at online reviews to see if anyone’s had an issue with a recent Cozmo purchase.
Investigative Summary – Pros

Your kids will enjoy hours of fun straight out of the box. Anki’s website states that Cozmo has a ‘Big Brain. Bigger Personality.’ We couldn’t agree more. This charming little guy comes with pre-designed activities and games for your kids to explore that rewards them when they do. Therefore, the more they interact with Cozmo, the more he will evolve.

It’s Cozmo’s personality that your kids will fall in love with from the start, but it’s his ability to evolve that will keep them coming back. The more your kids play with Cozmo, filling his Play, Tune-Up, and Feed bars, the more Sparks they will earn and the more his abilities will grow.

The Cozmo app is equipped with the following options – Code Lab, Explorer Mode, Games, Tricks, Cozmo Says, and Meet Cozmo. We were especially impressed with Cozmo’s face recognition ability. Your kids will love hearing Cozmo greet them by name. Who doesn’t love a little personal interaction from their new best friend?

Whether your kids want to enjoy some pre-designed activities, take Cozmo exploring, or use the Code Lab to write their own programs with Scratch, the Cozmo app will provide them with limitless possibilities.

When your kids are ready to take their STEM skills to an even higher level, check out the Anki Developer website for documentation and tutorials on the Cozmo Software Development Kit (SDK). With the Cozmo SDK, this adorable robot with the giant personality will transform from a cute toy that got your kids hooked on robotics, into a challenging STEM machine that allows your kids to program Cozmo using the Python programming language.

Investigative Summary – Cons

The main issue with the Anki Cozmo robot is the fact that Anki went out of business in May 2019. We’re still able to use our Cozmo robot, but we haven’t been able to find additional information on Cozmo’s status at this time. Check out our Future of Anki’s Cozmo Robot Mystery post for helpful tips on how to keep your Cozmo working for as long as possible.

Another possible issue is having to connect to Cozmo via the built-in Cozmo Wi-Fi, instead of Bluetooth. The Cozmo Wi-Fi is necessary since Cozmo’s brain is installed on your iOS/Android device so the continuous data streaming needed to operate Cozmo would be impossible to maintain smoothly via Bluetooth.

Note: We’re saying ‘possible’ issue because we honestly feel having to use the Cozmo Wi-Fi is a small price to pay for the benefits of this design. If Anki had designed Cozmo’s brain as part of Cozmo, the cost would have been higher. The more robot enthusiasts that can enjoy everything that Cozmo and the Cozmo Community has to offer, the better.

Anki’s Cozmo App – Main Screen

Anki Cozmo Robot

The main screen of the Cozmo app (see Figure 1 below) will supply your kids with a lot of useful information. They can see the status of Cozmo’s Play, Tune up, and Feedbars along the top of the screen. Their current number of Sparksavailable for use is located at the bottom right corner. And in the center, your kids will be able to scroll through Cozmo’s main features: CodeLab, Explorer Mode, Games, Tricks, Cozmo Says, and Meet Cozmo. We will be discussing Cozmo’s Code Lab in this document.

Anki’s Cozmo App – Code Lab

The Cozmo Code Lab is almost as impressive as Cozmo’s personality. Your kids can choose between Sandbox Mode, Constructor Mode, or Featured Projects (see Figure 2 below).

Anki’s Cozmo App – Sandbox Mode

Sandbox Mode is good for your younger kids. They can drag and drop blocks, labeled with easy to decipher images, into a series of commands as they create their first programs. There are currently five categories of blocks in Sandbox Mode – Drive, Actions, Animations, Events, and Controls(see Figure 3below).

Anki’s Cozmo App – Constructor Mode

Constructor Mode is where your kids can start programming Cozmo with Scratch Style coding blocks. Similar to Sandbox Mode, your kids will drag and drop these blocks into a series of steps to create their programs, but these blocks include more advanced skills. Watch your kids’ coding skills grow as they work with branching, loops, variables and more (see Figure 4 below).

Does Anki Cozmo Still Work

Constructor Mode currently contains nine categories of coding blocks, the five Sandbox categories, and four new ones – Sensors, Display, Operators, and Data. Each category contains more blocks than we can show, so Figure 5 below shows a sample of what they look like.

Cozmo’s Featured Projects Areais entertaining and educational at the same time. Not only can your kids complete the challenge (see Figure 6 below), but they can access the code used to create the challenge, mix it up a little, and see what happens (see Figure 7 below).
